High-tension cable barrier installation begins Monday, June 5, in Champlin and Brooklyn Park

Roseville, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin installing high-tension cable barrier and new guardrail along nearly 5.5 miles of Hwy 169 in Champlin and Brooklyn Park on Monday evening, June 5. The barrier will be installed in the median of Hwy 169 between County Road 81/Bottineau Boulevard in Brooklyn Park and West River Road/Dean Avenue in Champlin

During the project, crews will work overnights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Motorists will encounter temporary left lane and shoulder closures in each direction throughout the project although left turn lanes will remain open at intersections. All work will be completed by mid-July.

All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather permitting and subject to change.

Concern about the severity and continued occurrence of cross-median crashes has prompted MnDOT to install protective barriers in the median in areas prone to these types of crashes. Since the first installation of high-tension cable barrier in Minnesota in 2004, it has proven to be 95 percent effective at reducing fatal and life-changing crashes caused by vehicles crossing the median into oncoming traffic.
